Installer

The installer walks you through the installation: downloading the firmware, flashing both boards, setting up the offline maps. You need a USB cable, a screwdriver and about twenty minutes.

Every release is tested on real hardware, on all three platforms. Even so, this overwrites your scooter’s firmware, and if it goes wrong the scooter will not be rideable until you fix it. Changes you make to the scooter are made at your own risk. Discord is the place to ask, though everyone here works on this in their spare time.

The Windows build is not code-signed; when SmartScreen warns, click More infoRun anyway.

BetaInstaller 2.0 updates a scooter instead of reinstalling it, and runs the second half of the installation on the scooter itself, without the laptop. The beta has completed full installs on our own scooters and is now being tested more widely. It is intended for users who can provide the log file if something fails. Current release: 2.0.0 beta 15. Process and duration

  • A complete installation takes about 15 to 20 minutes, downloads not included. For roughly 13 of those the scooter works on its own, with the USB cable connected to the display; the laptop side is a few minutes and two hands-on steps, restarting the scooter and moving the cable.
  • Progress is visible on the scooter: the turn signals act as a progress bar and the display LED shows the overall state. A failure is signalled by a red blinking display LED and the hazard lights.
  • After a failure the scooter remains reachable. When the laptop is reconnected, the installer reads the state from the scooter, shows the cause and starts the installation over. Files already transferred are not uploaded again.
  • The log file is in Documents/Librescoot Installer. Please attach it to every report.

New compared to version 1

  • Update instead of reinstall: settings, keycards, maps and trips are preserved.
  • Each of the two boards can be set separately to be updated, reinstalled or left unchanged.
  • Only a small boot system is written to the board; the system itself is installed as an update package, the same way later OTA updates are.
  • Once the USB cable is back on the display, the laptop is no longer needed. The scooter installs the display, maps and routing itself and unlocks when it is done.
  • The display shows which step is running during its own installation and, in case of a failure, the cause.
  • On the laptop, the installer shows the current step and its usual duration, and reports when a step takes longer than expected.

Firmware Updates

To install an update, enable update mode via the display menu, then copy the .mender file over USB. For fresh installations, use the installer app above.

Map & Routing Data

Updated 2026-08-12

Offline map tiles and turn-by-turn routing data, available per region. Each one also covers about 20 km of the surrounding area. Download the map and routing files for your region and copy them to the scooter via USB. Only one region can be installed at a time. See offline navigation for setup instructions.
